Patient Care Assistant Technician

Patient care technicians play a vital role in the delivery of health care, often having more patient contact than any other team member including doctors and nurses. The patient care technician assists patients with tasks they cannot do for themselves, such as bathing, brushing their teeth and hair, eating, and dressing. Additional responsibilities may include performing range of motion exercises, transferring the patient to and from a wheelchair or bed, and helping the patient move from place to place.

What Will You Study?
Our curriculum is diverse, offering a variety of training methods to help you develop the skills you need to succeed on the job. Specific course topics include:
- Home health with emphasis on communication skills, observing, reporting and recording, and maintaining a safe home health care environment
- Mental health services including topics such as anxiety, patient safety, chemical dependency, and developmental disorders
- Patient care assisting to develop skills in taking vital signs, assisting surgical, pediatric, and obstetrics patients, and learning to cope with death and dying
- Specialized care procedures including caring for wounds and changing dressings, performing respiratory care procedures, collecting specimens, and performing lab tests, phlebotomy, and electrocardiography
Gain Real-World Experience
Prior to graduating from the program, you will be required to complete an externship at a health care facility in the community. The externship experience offers you an opportunity to gain real-world experience to prepare you for an entry-level position as patient care assistant/ technician (PCAT), health care technician, patient care assistant, nursing or home health aide, phlebotomist, electrocardiograph aide, or allied health assistant. Most employment opportunities for patient care technicians are in private practice offices, clinics, hospitals, group homes, med/psych units, rehab centers, or patients' homes.
